Winter Skin Care Routine For Dry and Flaky Skin

It's that time of year again!
Pull out the deep action face washes, moisturizers, and scrubs; along with the intensive moisturizing face masks - it's gonna be a rough couple of months for you dry skinned peeps out there!
For the most part, my skin tends to be on the more 'normal' type. I don't really get oily - aside from my under eyes - and I don't really get dry skin either - expect during harsh weather. Winter is extremely harsh on my skin and so I've set out to create the perfect skin care routine for this season, especially after last year.

"What happened last year?" you might ask, well, my face was horribly attacked by the dry and harsh winds. It was SO flaky, it took months to recover. Yes. Months. My T-zone got it the worst, and so I'm making sure to avoid that this year with a special selection of products that have literally transformed my skin overnight ! Now, lets get onto the actual routine itself -

Cleansers

In the summer, I used to skip this step a lot due to late nights and falling asleep the minute my head touches the pillow. However, that just isn't possible in the winter anymore. Not if I want healthy and clear skin. I've been switching between two cleansers every few days - The Face Shop's Rice Water Cleansing Foam, and Sunday Riley's Clay Cleanser -  because I find once my skin gets used to a product it doesn't work as well.

THE FACE SHOP RICE WATER CLEANSING FOAM - This is definitely my go-to for my lazy nights, whenever I just want to wash my face quick and crash for the night. It smells very fruity, I can't really put my finger on which fruit but it definitely has a sweetness to it that lifts my mood. It's extremely easy to use, even if you're completely out of it after a late night with the gals. Just squeeze a dime size amount onto your fingers, lather it with warm water ,and massage it into your face in circular motions before rinsing. It's a great cleanser for sensitive skin as it's made with a creamy texture to avoid any sort of irritation. It's also meant to brighten the skin over time to even out any discoloration from acne scars. At $13.00CAD where can you go wrong?

SUNDAY RILEY CERAMIC SLIP CLAY CLEANSER - This cleanser, although meant for normal to oily skin, works wonders for me so far in this harsh Canadian weather. It's a great cleanser to use if you're going to be using a deeply hydrating face mask, overnight mask, or oil as it wont add any excess moisture that could clog pores. In fact, it's made with French green clay and Moroccan rhassoul clay which removes excess oils and impurities without stripping the skin from essential oils all while minimizing pore size. It's also a brightening cleanser as well, made with Neroli essential oils that balance, soothe, and calm skin and vitamin C to brighten. I use this on my whole face, and sometimes I even multi-cleanse (similar to multi-masking) and focus it more on my under eyes that tend to have excess oils and anywhere that I have impurities/discoloration.

FACE MASKS

I have grown to appreciate face masks in the last month. There's something so calming about having a face mask on while taking a relaxing bath or curled up on the couch reading a good book. I really like using sheet masks, because they're much quicker to put on and a lot cleaner to take off. Don't get me wrong, I still love the traditional wash-off masks - especially the Oatifix Mask from Lush, but I'm usually tired when I get home and having to rinse my face continuously 'till it's all off just isn't something I want to do every night.

THE FACE SHOP REAL NATURE ALOE SHEET FACE MASK - I didn't have this included in the picture as I had used up my last one the night before this shoot, but it is one of my top faves when it comes to moisturizing sheet masks. Aloe Vera is literally one of THE BEST natural ingredients to use for skin care.
Aloe is known to moisturize skin without leaving behind a greasy texture (which means it's safe for any oily skinned people out there). It also contains two hormones: Auxin and Gibberellins. Both provide anti-inflammatory properties and healing properties to heal skin quickly without scarring. It's also a very well known age preventative as it works to firm skin elasticity all while keeping the skin hydrated. This sheet mask has so many helpful benefits for the skin and it's only $2.00CAD at The Face Shop - that's some next level bargain in my opinion! I literally just rip it out of the packaging, place it on my face for 15 - 20 minutes and then throw it out, working in any excess moisture into my skin to soften and hydrate my skin as much as possible.

LANEIGE WATER SLEEPING MASK - I was so excited to get this as one of my gifts for Christmas from my special someone because I had been eyeing this moisturizing mask for months! No seriously, it had been sitting in my Sephora cart for months as I was deciding on whether or not to try it (I'm super super suuuuuuper picky when it comes to skin care). This was my first try at an overnight mask and I love it! It's basically a gel mask made from apricot and primrose extracts that purify and detoxify the skin. It comes with a tiny spoon to scoop up the gel with and apply an even layer to the skin, then you're to leave it on overnight and rinse off in the morning. It's super effective at hydrating and brightening skin. I'm thinking of doing a review post on this mask, let me know if that's something you'd like to read!

FACE CREAMS

SUNDAY RILEY GOOD GENES ALL-IN-ONE LACTIC ACID TREATMENT - Although it's called a treatment, I classify it more as a cream. It's intended for oily skin types, but I find that it works for my normal-dry skin just as well. It's meant to brighten the skin as well as exfoliate. It's a great cream for anti-aging too as it plumps lines for a more youthful look, while reducing the appearance of hyper pigmentation and discoloration. I like to use this cream during the night when I'm not using a night mask or my Tidal cream as I wake up with glowing and radiant skin.

SUNDAY RILEY TIDAL BRIGHTENING ENZYME WATER CREAM - There's a lot of things I can say about this cream *insert thinking emoji*... I mean it's good, don't get me wrong, its really good. It's the perfect cream for dry skin as it "delivers an intense water drench with two forms of hyaluronic acid and tamarind extract" which hydrates and plumps the skin. The papaya enzymes work to smooth and exfoliate the skin while other ingredients reduce the appearance of hyper pigmentation. The only con I have with this cream is that it stinks, horribly. The smell is rather repulsive to be completely honest and it's quite hard to get used to personally. However, it's definitely something I could ignore as the results are quite noticeable!

NIGHT OILS

I'm still quite new to the night oil trend going on, but I can see why it's such a big thing. So far, I've only tried one night oil so I don't have much to compare it to but it's bloody amazing!

SUNDAY RILEY LUNA SLEEPING NIGHT OIL - If you haven't heard about this oil, where have you been for the last like year?! Every beauty vlogger I'm subscribed to seem to love this oil just as much as I do! It's basically a retinoid oil that works to improve skin plumpness while working to reduce wrinkles, redness, and pore size for a more youthful appearance to skin. It absorbs rather quickly in my experience so I tend to drop a little more than I normally would, focusing on my dryer areas. It's amazing at reducing the appearance of spots as well! I had an extremely annoying zit on my forehead, right between my brows, and when I woke up the next morning after using this it was gone! I'll definitely be repurchasing the larger size of this once I run out of my current one.

So there you have it, my current (mainly night-time) winter skin care routine for dry and flaky skin. If you've tried these products please let me know how you like them, also I'd love to know what skin-care products you currently use as I'd love to research a few others and potentially try them as well!

Lots of love !
